Museum of the Ilinden Uprising and the Krushevo Republic
This museum is housed in one of the most historically significant buildings in Macedonia – the 19th-century traditional house of Gjore Makrev. It was in this very house, belonging to the family of the famous Tomalevski revolutionaries, that the Krushevo Republic was officially proclaimed in 1903.
Highlights of the Exhibition:
The museum offers a chronological journey through the struggle for independence and the birth of the first republic in the Balkans:
- Original Revolutionary Relics: Authentic weaponry of various origins, rebel uniforms, traditional costumes, and original insurgent flags.
- Invaluable Documents: Records of the city’s origins, the strategic preparations for the uprising, and the legendary Krushevo Manifesto.
- Nikola Karev and the Government: A dedicated section focuses on President Nikola Karev, the Council members, and the organization of the provisional government.
- The Tragedy of Krushevo: Poignant materials and photographs documenting the aftermath of the uprising’s suppression and the hardships endured by the locals.
